The Forerunner 235 will last you about 11 hours with an active GPS signal, an hour longer than the 225. That time drops to under 9 hours if you use both GPS and GLONASS.
The company has said that, Garmin Forerunner 235 in watch mode with notifications and heart rate enabled, the watch should last up to nine days. I generally charged it once a week, but your time will vary based on how much you run.

Clients Q&A:
Does this watch have continuous heart rate monitoring like the fitbit surge?
I am not familiar with the fitbit however this garmin forerunner 235 monitors your heart rate constantly as long as you are wearing it. I wear mine even while I am sleeping. It is neat to see my resting heartbeat. Love it!
Is Garmin Forerunner 235 water resistant?
Yes, it is… I looked at the manual and the water rating is actually 5 ATM (atmospheres), not 5 meters. 5 ATM actually equates to about 50 meters deep, so technically you could swim or shower with this watch just fine. Just be aware that this model doesn’t currently have any swim tracking features built in so there’s not much of a point to swimming with it anyway.
Does the GPS work if it’s covered by a jacket or long sleeved shirt?
I purchased this for my wife so I do not use it however I am a surveyor so I do have vast experience with GPS. GPS signals will not be hindered by thin materials such as cloth. Inside buildings with wood and shingle roofs will throw the location of a bit reducing the accuracy.
GPS signals simply do not penetrate metal objects. That being said you should not experience any loss of signal or accuracy using typical clothing items. You may experience some issues if the device was covered with something metallic such as those solar blankets.
Perhaps a good experiment to ease your mind is use your cell phone’s GPS tucked into your sleeve as the technology is nearly identical in all small consumer products. When in “normal” non-exercise mode, can i set the watch face just to display time, day & date ?
Yes, I wear it as a watch that normally displays time, date and battery life. Then I can toggle thru other displays when I want to see heart rate, steps, weather, calendar, workout, or any of the other features.
Is the Garmin Forerunner 235 compatible with iPhone/ Android smartphones?
The Garmin Forerunner 235 has accurate GPS for tracking runs and a 24/7 wrist-based heart-rate monitor. It can track all-day activities like steps and sleep, and can display notifications from iPhone and Android devices. It’s water-resistant and can be worn in the shower or while swimming.
How long does the Garmin 235 battery last?
Battery Life = 11 hours
Garmin says the Forerunner 235 will last 11 hours on a charge in Training Mode (using GPS and the heart-rate monitor) and up to nine days when it’s being used as a watch with activity tracking, notifications and the heart rate monitor
Changes from the Garmin Forerunner 225
Garmin Forerunner 235 adds more than a dozen new features to the 225. It’s also thinner, lighter, has a higher resolution display and less of a bezel. The watch adds all-day heart rate tracking, smartphone notifications, music controls and access to Garmin’s Connect IQ app store.
On the fitness side of things, it includes support for GLONASS (the Russian GPS satellite alternative), which helps improve locating you in areas where GPS may be limited.
There’s also a feature for predicting your race times and a recovery advisor to help you determine when you’re ready for that next hard workout.
The watch can even estimate your VO2 Max (a metric used by athletes for measuring the maximum amount of oxygen that can be used during workouts). All of this is in addition to the basic running features like auto pause, auto lap, interval workouts and keeping track of your personal records.
The best overall GPS running watch
If you’re looking for a GPS running watch with heart rate, the Garmin Forerunner 235 is worth the investment. The heart rate measurements aren’t perfect during hard workouts, but the benefits of the watch outweigh the cons by a mile.
It’s accurate at measuring pace and distance, provides easy-to-read smartphone alerts and has a ton of running features that are typically found on more advanced devices.
Simply put: It’s a great value.
